Overview

Avenanthramides are a group of low molecular weight phenolic alkaloids found almost exclusively in oats (*Avena sativa*), where they act as phytoalexins (plant defense molecules) against pathogens. Over 40 types of avenanthramides have been identified, with Avn-A, Avn-B, and Avn-C most abundant. They possess strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-itch, and skin-soothing properties, making them leading actives in topical and dermatological formulations. Their bioactivity is demonstrated in reduction of oxidative stress and modulation of inflammatory pathways—effects attributed to their ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and downregulate inflammatory cytokine expression[5][1][2][3]. They are used in formulations derived from oat extracts, flour, and oil, and confer benefits ranging from allergy and irritation reduction to possible cardiovascular and neuroprotective effects.
