Overview

The avian immune system is a specialized physiological network comprising unique organs such as the Bursa of Fabricius, which serves as the primary site for B-lymphocyte development and diversification (Schat et al., 2014). It integrates innate defenses, including heterophils (the avian functional equivalent of neutrophils) and a robust complement system, with adaptive responses mediated by T and B cells to provide protection against a wide array of pathogens (Davison, 2008; Harmon, 1998). This system is central to the pathology of major poultry diseases like Avian Influenza and Marek's disease, where immune evasion or overactivation can lead to high mortality and significant economic loss (Nair, 2005). While not a single molecular target, the avian immune system is the functional recipient of various veterinary interventions, including live-attenuated, killed, and recombinant vaccines that modulate immune signaling pathways to confer long-term resistance (Bermudez & Stewart-Brown, 2008). Understanding the avian-specific immune architecture, such as the lack of regional lymph nodes in most species and the presence of the B-complex (MHC), is essential for developing effective biosecurity measures and therapeutic strategies in the poultry industry (Erf, 2004).
