Target intelligence / Profile preview
Avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) QX-like variants, classified under the GI-19 lineage, are highly contagious gammacoronaviruses that pose a significant threat to the global poultry industry. Originally identified in China, these variants have spread extensively across Europe and Asia, causing severe respiratory disease, proventriculitis, and significant kidney damage (nephritis) in chickens. The virus utilizes its Spike (S) glycoprotein to bind to host cell receptors, with the S1 subunit being the primary determinant of tissue tropism and the main target for neutralizing antibodies. Therapeutic intervention primarily focuses on vaccination; however, QX-like variants are notorious for their ability to evade immunity generated by traditional Massachusetts-type vaccines due to high genetic diversity in the S1 gene. Consequently, control strategies often require the development of genotype-specific (homologous) vaccines. Beyond vaccines, research into small-molecule inhibitors targeting the viral main protease (Mpro) or RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) is ongoing to provide broader protection against emerging variants. The rapid evolution of QX-like strains through point mutations and recombination remains a major challenge for long-term disease management.
Prevention of infection via neutralizing antibodies targeting the Spike (S1) glycoprotein; inhibition of viral RNA synthesis; modulation of the host innate immune response.
