Avian influenza virus type A subtype H9N2 (A/H9N2) is a low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) virus that primarily infects birds but can also infect mammals, including humans. It possesses a segmented RNA genome encoding key proteins like hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). H9N2 exhibits significant genetic diversity and has zoonotic potential due to adaptations that enhance binding to human-like receptors. While typically causing mild respiratory illness in humans, its role as a gene donor for emergent zoonotic strains warrants continued monitoring.
Neuraminidase inhibitors block the release of virus from infected cells. M2 inhibitors block the M2 proton channel, preventing viral uncoating.
