AZIN1 antisense RNA 2 (AZIN1-AS2)

Target
AZIN1-AS2
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA, Non-coding RNA, Regulatory RNA
01

Overview

AZIN1 antisense RNA 2 is a long non-coding RNA gene transcribed from the genomic locus antisense to the protein-coding AZIN1 gene. As with many lncRNAs, AZIN1-AS2 may regulate the expression of its sense mRNA partner (AZIN1) through RNA-RNA interactions, transcriptional interference, or epigenetic modification. Functional and mechanistic evidence specifically for AZIN1-AS2 is limited, and it is not widely recognized as a direct therapeutic target. The most prominent research on the AZIN1 locus concerns the protein-coding gene (AZIN1), which is involved in polyamine regulation, RNA editing, and several cancers; these findings do not directly translate to AZIN1-AS2.

Mechanism of action

None established for drugs (since no drug targets are known). General lncRNA mechanisms may involve RNA-RNA binding or chromatin interactions regulating sense gene expression.

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression (at transcriptional or post-transcriptional level)Modulation of its sense gene (AZIN1) mRNA stability or splicing
04

Disease associations

Cancer (putative, based on lncRNA involvement broadly)Other (potential regulation of cellular phenotype; limited direct evidence for AZIN1-AS2 itself)
