Overview
CD79b is a key component of the B cell antigen receptor (BCR) complex. It forms a heterodimer with CD79a, which then associates with membrane-bound immunoglobulin to form the functional BCR. Upon antigen binding, CD79b's ITAM motif is phosphorylated, initiating downstream signaling cascades that lead to B cell activation, proliferation, differentiation, and antibody production. CD79b is essential for B cell development and is implicated in B cell malignancies. Mutations in CD79B are associated with agammaglobulinemia type 6.
