B-cell epitope of grass pollen allergen

Molecular classification
Other (epitope/antigenic determinant), Protein fragment (can be linear or conformational)
01

Overview

B-cell epitopes of grass pollen allergens are specific regions on major allergen proteins (such as Phl p 1 and Phl p 5 from timothy and group 5/6 grass pollen allergens) that are recognized by the variable domains of B-cell receptors and antibodies, predominantly IgE and IgG. They can be linear (continuous sequences of amino acids) or conformational (spatially proximate residues defined by 3D structure), and their recognition by IgE leads to allergic sensitization and symptoms, while their targeting by IgG (via immunotherapy or vaccination) can block IgE binding and induce tolerance. Mapping and modifying these epitopes provides the basis for developing safer and more effective allergy vaccines and diagnostics, as well as understanding molecular mechanisms of immunity and hypersensitivity in grass pollen allergy.

Mechanism of action

Induction of blocking antibodies (IgG) to compete with IgE for allergen binding; Reduction of allergic sensitization by desensitization (tolerization to allergen via exposure); Inhibition of IgE-mediated allergic responses (by outcompeting or blocking IgE-allergen interactions)

05

Safety considerations
