B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) mRNA is the messenger RNA transcribed from the BCL-2 gene, encoding the BCL-2 protein, a key anti-apoptotic regulator. Overexpression of BCL-2 mRNA and its encoded protein is implicated in various cancers, particularly lymphomas, leading to increased cell survival and resistance to chemotherapy. It is a therapeutic target for antisense oligonucleotides and small molecule inhibitors to promote apoptosis in cancer cells.
Antisense oligonucleotides reduce intracellular levels of BCL-2 mRNA; small molecule inhibitors target the BCL-2 protein.
