Overview

B-cell receptor-associated protein 29 (BCAP29) is a membrane-associated protein encoded on human chromosome 7. It acts as a chaperone, facilitating the correct ER-to-Golgi trafficking of proteins such as P-glycoprotein, and retaining membrane-bound IgD in the ER. BCAP29 is involved in cellular processes such as osteoblast differentiation, protein processing, and in certain contexts, apoptosis. Although a fusion transcript DUS4L-BCAP29 has been observed to promote cellular proliferation in both cancer/non-cancer cells, BCAP29 itself is not classically regarded as a cancer driver, therapeutic target, or major biomarker. Alternative isoforms such as Bap29varP modulate trafficking of specific proteins and play roles in multidrug resistance. The protein is widely expressed and is mainly localized to cellular membranes and the endoplasmic reticulum.
