Target intelligence / Profile preview
B-cell receptors (BCRs) specific for mumps virus (MuV) hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) and fusion (F) protein epitopes are specialized membrane-bound immunoglobulins that mediate the host's adaptive immune response to mumps infection (PMID: 30108116). These receptors recognize specific antigenic sites on the MuV surface glycoproteins: the HN protein, which is responsible for sialic acid receptor binding and neuraminidase activity, and the F protein, which facilitates viral-cell membrane fusion (PMID: 28254971). Upon engagement with these viral epitopes, the BCRs trigger signaling cascades that result in B-cell activation, clonal expansion, and the production of neutralizing antibodies (Janeway's Immunobiology, 9th edition). This interaction is the primary target of live-attenuated mumps vaccines, such as the Jeryl Lynn strain, which aim to elicit a robust and lasting B-cell memory response (PMID: 27131866). Understanding the specificity and affinity of these BCRs is crucial for developing next-generation vaccines and therapeutic monoclonal antibodies to combat mumps outbreaks, particularly in populations with waning vaccine-induced immunity (PMID: 32054758).
