BMI-1 is a transcriptional repressor and a member of the polycomb group (PcG) family of proteins. It plays a critical role in regulating cell proliferation, apoptosis, and stem cell self-renewal by repressing genes like p16INK4a and p14ARF. BMI-1 is overexpressed in various cancers, including gastric carcinoma and salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma, where it is associated with increased tumor aggressiveness, invasion, and metastasis.
