Overview
BMI1 is a core component of the Polycomb Repressive Complex 1 (PRC1), a multiprotein complex that maintains transcriptional repression of target genes through chromatin modification. It plays critical roles in stem cell self-renewal, cell cycle regulation, and DNA repair, and is implicated as an oncogene in various cancers. It acts by mediating monoubiquitination of histone H2A at lysine119.
