Overview

B melanoma antigen family member 2 (BAGE2) is a member of the BAGE family of cancer/testis antigens, a gene family whose members encode tumor antigens recognized by cytolytic T lymphocytes. BAGE2 was initially discovered through its expression in melanoma and other tumors, with expression patterns restricted in adults primarily to the testis. The predicted BAGE2 protein consists of 109 amino acids, is located in the extracellular region, and shares high sequence similarity with other BAGE family members. Like other cancer/testis antigens, BAGE2 is not typically expressed in normal tissues except for the testis, but is re-expressed in several tumor types including melanoma, ovarian, breast, and lung cancers. The functions of BAGE2 and other cancer/testis antigens are not fully defined, but evidence from related antigens suggests roles in regulating cell proliferation, survival, and possibly contributing to tumorigenesis and immune evasion. BAGE2 and related CT antigens are considered promising targets for cancer immunotherapy, but clinical targeting requires caution because of the risk of inducing immune responses against normal testicular tissue[1][3][5].
