Overview

Babesia bovis is a tick-borne protozoan parasite of the phylum Apicomplexa that causes bovine babesiosis, a disease of significant economic importance in tropical and subtropical cattle industries [1]. The parasite is transmitted by Rhipicephalus ticks and undergoes a complex life cycle involving the invasion and asexual replication within host erythrocytes [2]. Clinical infection is characterized by high fever, severe hemolytic anemia, and hemoglobinuria; a unique feature of B. bovis is the sequestration of infected erythrocytes in brain capillaries, leading to often-fatal neurological signs known as cerebral babesiosis [3]. While B. bovis is an organism rather than a single molecular target, it contains numerous essential metabolic pathways—such as the apicoplast and mitochondrial respiratory chain—that are targeted by current babesiacides like diminazene aceturate and imidocarb [4]. Ongoing research focuses on identifying specific parasite enzymes, such as proteases and kinases, to develop more effective vaccines and targeted small-molecule inhibitors to overcome issues of toxicity and drug resistance [5, 6]. Mechanism of action

Drugs targeting Babesia bovis act through various mechanisms: diminazene aceturate inhibits DNA synthesis and topoisomerase activity [Vial & Goma, 1995]; imidocarb dipropionate interferes with polyamine metabolism and parasite entry [Bock et al., 2004]; and atovaquone inhibits the mitochondrial cytochrome bc1 complex, disrupting the electron transport chain [Jalovecka et al., 2019].
