Overview

Babesia microti antigens are a diverse group of proteins expressed on the surface or secreted by the Babesia microti parasite, the primary causative agent of human babesiosis. These antigens, including BmGPI12, BmAMA1, and BmGP15, play critical roles in the parasite's life cycle, particularly in the attachment to and invasion of host erythrocytes and the evasion of the host immune system. They are the primary targets of the human humoral immune response, where the production of specific antibodies (IgG and IgM) is essential for controlling and clearing the infection. In clinical diagnostics, these antigens and the corresponding human antibodies serve as vital biomarkers for identifying active or past infections. From a therapeutic perspective, these antigens are being investigated as candidates for recombinant vaccines and as targets for passive immunization using monoclonal antibodies, which may offer a novel treatment pathway for persistent or relapsing babesiosis in immunocompromised individuals.
