Overview

Bacillus coagulans is a Gram-positive, spore-forming, lactic acid-producing bacterium widely recognized for its probiotic properties. While it was formerly known as Lactobacillus sporogenes and has recently been reclassified to Weizmannia coagulans and then Heyndrickxia coagulans, the name Bacillus coagulans remains commonly used. Unlike many other probiotics, its spore-forming ability allows it to survive harsh conditions, including stomach acid, and germinate in the intestines, making it particularly robust. As a probiotic, B. coagulans contributes to gut health by modulating the gut microbiota, increasing beneficial bacteria, and reducing harmful ones. It enhances the intestinal barrier function and regulates immune responses by promoting anti-inflammatory cytokines and T-regulatory cells. These actions contribute to its therapeutic potential in various gastrointestinal conditions such as constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and different types of diarrhea. It has also been explored as an adjunct therapy for inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Bacillus coagulans is generally considered safe, with studies showing it can be used safely in specified doses for extended periods. However, some individuals may experience mild gastrointestinal upset like gas or bloating. Mechanism of action

Bacillus coagulans exerts its beneficial effects primarily as a probiotic by modulating the gut microbiota, increasing beneficial bacteria, and reducing pathogenic ones. It enhances the intestinal barrier by upregulating tight junction proteins, which helps prevent pathogen invasion and reduces inflammation. The bacterium also regulates immune responses by increasing anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10 and promoting Treg cell accumulation, while suppressing pro-inflammatory mediators. Additionally, B. coagulans produces bacteriocins that disrupt pathogenic bacteria and alleviates oxidative stress by activating antioxidant pathways. It produces lactic acid and aids in the digestion of carbohydrates and proteins, contributing to overall gut health.
