Bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA

Molecular classification
Ribosomal RNA (rRNA)
01

Overview

The bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) is a component of the small (30S) subunit of prokaryotic ribosomes and plays a critical role in protein synthesis. It contains both highly conserved and hypervariable regions, making it a valuable phylogenetic marker for bacterial identification and taxonomic classification. The 16S rRNA gene is widely used in clinical diagnostics to detect and identify bacterial pathogens, even in cases where traditional culture methods are ineffective. While not a direct therapeutic target, its essential role in bacterial protein synthesis makes it an indirect target for many antibiotics.
