Overview

Bacterial adhesion to urothelial cells is a critical early event in the pathogenesis of urinary tract infections (UTIs). This process enables uropathogenic bacteria, most notably *Escherichia coli* (UPEC), to colonize and invade the urinary tract, leading to infection. The interaction involves specific bacterial surface structures called adhesins that recognize and bind to receptors on the surface of urothelial cells. Key bacterial adhesins include Type 1 fimbriae (FimH adhesin) which binds to uroplakins, and P pili (PapG adhesin).
