Overview

Bacterial amyloid aggregation refers to the process by which certain bacterial proteins self-assemble into highly ordered, β-sheet–rich fibrillar structures known as amyloids. In bacteria, amyloid formation can occur naturally as part of cellular processes or under stress conditions. While some bacterial amyloids have functional roles, others can contribute to disease by interacting with host proteins or influencing the aggregation of human pathological amyloids. This phenomenon is relevant to both understanding microbial pathogenesis and addressing challenges in recombinant protein production.
