Bacterial and keratinocyte membrane lipids and cellular components represent a broad, non-specific therapeutic target for various topical antiseptic and antimicrobial agents. These components include the phospholipid bilayers of both invading microbial pathogens and the host's epidermal cells (keratinocytes), as well as associated proteins and intracellular structures. Drugs targeting these elements, such as benzoyl peroxide, typically act through the generation of reactive oxygen species or direct oxidative stress, which disrupts the structural integrity of the cell membrane and denatures essential cellular proteins. While highly effective at reducing bacterial populations (e.g., Propionibacterium acnes in acne treatment), the lack of specificity can lead to collateral damage in host tissues, manifesting as localized inflammation or dryness. This target is primarily relevant in the context of dermatology and wound management where rapid, broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity is required.
