Overview

Bacterial and protozoal DNA refers to the genomic deoxyribonucleic acid molecules that encode genetic information in bacteria and protozoa. DNA is a polymer composed of deoxyribonucleotides, forming a double helix structure responsible for hereditary material in both groups[1][2][3][5]. In bacteria, DNA is typically organized in a circular chromosome, while in protozoa it is found within a membrane-bound nucleus (eukaryotic), sometimes existing as micronuclei and macronuclei[2][3]. DNA carries instructions for replication, transcription, and protein synthesis, and in protozoa, different nuclear forms manage genetic inheritance and basic cellular function[2][3]. While bacterial and protozoal DNA itself is not a single discrete molecular target but instead constitutes the entire genetic material of these organisms, it is targeted by certain antimicrobial and antiparasitic agents—such as aromatic diamidines, benzimidazole derivatives, and melarsoprol—for therapeutic intervention, usually by direct binding or by causing DNA damage[4]. Such interventions may face challenges like toxicity, low selectivity, resistance, and off-target effects[4].
