Bacterial and viral toxins are potent molecules produced by pathogens that facilitate infection and cause host tissue damage. Bacterial toxins are broadly categorized into exotoxins, which are secreted proteins such as botulinum or cholera toxins, and endotoxins, which are structural components like lipopolysaccharides from Gram-negative bacteria (StatPearls, 2023). Viral toxins, such as the Rotavirus NSP4 protein, act as viral enterotoxins to induce diarrhea by disrupting host cell signaling (PubMed, 2004). These toxins function by disrupting cellular membranes, interfering with protein synthesis, or overstimulating the immune system, leading to conditions like sepsis or toxic shock syndrome. Therapeutic intervention typically involves the administration of neutralizing monoclonal antibodies or antitoxins that sequester the toxins, preventing their binding to host cell receptors and mitigating their pathological effects (FDA, 2016). Because this term encompasses a vast array of distinct molecular entities, it is generally treated as a therapeutic class rather than a single molecular target.
