The "bacterial barrier function" refers to a complex physiological property of epithelial barriers (especially the intestinal mucosa) that restricts the translocation of bacteria and their products from the lumen into tissue or systemic circulation. This function is mediated by a combination of mechanical (tight junctions between epithelial cells), chemical (mucus layer and antimicrobial peptides), immunological (gut-associated lymphoid tissue, immune effector cells), and biological (commensal microbial flora) components. Disruption of this barrier can result in increased susceptibility to infection and inflammatory diseases.
Not applicable as a direct molecular target; modulatory mechanisms include enhancement of tight junctions, induction of mucin production, and modulation via microbial metabolites.
