Target intelligence / Profile preview
Bacterial capsular polysaccharides (CPS) are long-chain carbohydrate polymers that form a dense capsule surrounding the cell wall of many bacteria. They are composed of repeating units of sugars and exhibit high structural diversity. CPS protect bacteria from environmental stresses, host immune defenses, and bacteriophages, acting as a virulence factor and contributing to biofilm formation. CPS diversity is used for serotyping bacterial isolates, and they are targets for vaccine development and phage therapy.
