Overview

The bacterial cell membrane is a phospholipid bilayer that regulates transport and interfaces directly with the environment. The biofilm matrix is a complex extracellular assembly composed primarily of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and extracellular nucleic acids (typically termed extracellular polymeric substances, or EPS). The matrix is produced by bacteria as a protective layer during the formation of biofilms, contributing to adhesion, immune evasion, cellular communication, and increased resistance to antibiotics and biocides. Both the cell membrane and biofilm matrix are vital to bacterial survival and pathogenesis—targeting them is a major strategy in the development of new antimicrobials and anti-biofilm therapies. Yet, the diversity and complexity of matrix composition among bacterial species poses significant challenges for drug development and clinical eradication[2][3][4][6][7][8].
