Overview

Bacterial cell membrane and metabolic process represent a broad class of therapeutic targets essential for the viability and pathogenesis of bacteria. The bacterial cell envelope, including the cytoplasmic membrane and the peptidoglycan cell wall, maintains structural integrity and serves as a barrier against environmental stress (Silhavy et al., 2010). Metabolic processes such as folate biosynthesis, protein translation, and DNA replication are highly conserved within bacteria but often possess distinct structural features compared to their eukaryotic counterparts, allowing for selective pharmacological intervention (Murima et al., 2014). Antibiotics like beta-lactams and glycopeptides target cell wall assembly, while polymyxins and lipopeptides directly disrupt membrane function (Poirel et al., 2017). Other agents, such as sulfonamides and fluoroquinolones, inhibit specific metabolic enzymes and DNA-handling proteins, respectively (Kohanski et al., 2010). These targets are central to the treatment of diverse infectious diseases, though their efficacy is increasingly challenged by the emergence of complex resistance mechanisms (Blair et al., 2015).
