The bacterial cell membrane barrier is a phospholipid bilayer separating the cytoplasm from the external environment, found in all bacteria. It serves as a selective barrier, controlling the import and export of nutrients and waste, generating metabolic energy, synthesizing cell wall components, and mediating cell signaling and adhesion. In Gram-negative bacteria, the outer membrane provides an additional barrier with selective permeability, contributing to innate resistance against many antibiotics. Antibiotics and disinfectants may target the bacterial membrane either directly (causing disruption) or indirectly (by impeding cell wall precursor synthesis or energy metabolism). The structural and functional characteristics of the membrane play critical roles in infection, pathogenesis, and the development of antimicrobial resistance.
