Bacterial cell surface and intracellular components represent the diverse array of structural and functional elements within a bacterial cell that are exploited for antimicrobial therapy. Surface components include the peptidoglycan cell wall, which maintains osmotic stability, and the plasma membrane, which regulates transport and bioenergetics (StatPearls, 2023). Intracellular components encompass essential machinery such as the 30S and 50S ribosomal subunits required for protein synthesis, as well as DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV involved in DNA replication (NIH, 2022). Drugs targeting these components work by disrupting vital processes, leading to either bacteriostatic or bactericidal effects depending on the mechanism and bacterial species. For example, beta-lactam antibiotics inhibit cell wall synthesis, while fluoroquinolones interfere with DNA replication (PubMed, 2021). Because this term encompasses nearly all bacterial structures, it is generally considered a broad category of targets rather than a single specific molecular entity.
