Bacterial Cell Wall Synthesis Enzyme

Molecular classification
Enzyme, Mur family enzymes (MurA–MurF), MraY, MurG, Penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs)
01

Overview

Bacterial cell wall synthesis enzymes are a group of proteins responsible for constructing and remodeling the peptidoglycan layer, which is the primary structural component of most bacterial cell walls. This layer provides mechanical strength, maintains cell shape, and protects bacteria from osmotic lysis. The integrity of the peptidoglycan is essential for bacterial viability. These enzymes are targets for antibiotics, such as β-lactams and glycopeptides. Resistance mechanisms include production of β-lactamases or alteration/mutation in target PBPs.
