The bacterial cell wall synthesis enzyme complex is a multi-enzyme system responsible for the biosynthesis and assembly of peptidoglycan, a critical structural component of the bacterial cell wall. Peptidoglycan provides mechanical strength, maintains cell shape, and protects bacteria from osmotic lysis. The enzymes involved in this process are highly conserved among bacteria but absent in mammalian cells, making them prime targets for antibacterial drug development. The complex synthesizes peptidoglycan (PG), maintains cellular integrity, and determines bacterial morphology. Key components include Penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), RodA-PBP2 complex, and UDP-N-acetylmuramic acid synthase. Many antibiotics, like β-lactams, act by inhibiting these enzymes.
