Bacterial Cell Wall Synthesis Enzymes

Molecular classification
Enzyme
01

Overview

Bacterial cell wall synthesis enzymes are a group of proteins essential for the construction and maintenance of the bacterial cell wall, primarily through the biosynthesis of peptidoglycan. Peptidoglycan is a cross-linked polymer that forms a mesh-like layer outside the plasma membrane, providing structural integrity and shape to most bacteria. These enzymes are critical for bacterial viability, as they help bacteria withstand internal turgor pressure and prevent osmotic lysis. Many antibiotics target these enzymes due to their essentiality across diverse bacterial species. Key enzymes include Mur family (MurA–MurF), MraY & MurG, and Penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).
