Overview

A bacterial cellular component refers to any structural or functional part of a bacterial cell. Bacteria are prokaryotic organisms, meaning they lack membrane-bound organelles found in eukaryotes. Their cellular components include both internal and external structures that are essential for survival, growth, metabolism, replication, and interaction with the environment. Examples include: cytoplasm, plasma membrane, cell wall, outer membrane, nucleoid, ribosomes, plasmids, pili/fimbriae, flagella, capsule/slime layer, and endospores. These components collectively enable maintenance of homeostasis, energy generation, synthesis of macromolecules, reproduction via binary fission, and adaptation through gene exchange. These components are targets for antibiotics and play critical roles in pathogenesis when interacting with host organisms.
