Target intelligence / Profile preview
Bacterial cellular components and tooth mineral represent a composite pharmacological target system central to oral health and the management of dental caries. The bacterial component consists of the complex oral biofilm, where species such as Streptococcus mutans utilize enzymes like glucosyltransferases to adhere to surfaces and ferment dietary sugars into organic acids (NIH, 2023). These acids lower the local pH, leading to the demineralization of the tooth mineral component, which is primarily composed of hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) (StatPearls, 2023). Therapeutic agents like fluoride target this system by integrating into the mineral lattice to form fluorapatite, which is significantly more resistant to acid dissolution than the original hydroxyapatite (PubChem, 2024). Additionally, antimicrobial agents such as chlorhexidine target bacterial cellular components by disrupting cell membranes and inhibiting metabolic pathways, thereby reducing the acidogenic potential of the plaque (PubMed, 2022). This dual-target approach aims to both strengthen the host's physical structure and suppress the pathogenic activity of the surrounding microbiota.
Remineralization of enamel through the formation of fluorapatite, inhibition of bacterial enolase and glycolysis, and disruption of microbial cell membranes and protein synthesis.
