Bacterial cytoplasmic membrane permeability regulators are proteins or molecular systems controlling the passage of molecules across the bacterial inner membrane. These regulators, including porins, efflux pumps, and specific transporters, are critical for nutrient uptake, waste removal, and maintaining cellular homeostasis. Regulation occurs at the level of gene expression and post-translational modifications. Reduced permeability due to alterations in these regulators is a major mechanism of antibiotic resistance, especially in Gram-negative bacteria. Targeting these regulators offers therapeutic potential by restoring antibiotic sensitivity or sensitizing bacteria to antimicrobials.
