The bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase beta subunit (β subunit) is a core component of the multisubunit enzyme responsible for transcribing DNA into RNA in bacteria. Encoded by the rpoB gene, it is a crucial part of the RNA polymerase complex (α2ββ′ω). The β subunit contains the catalytic center for RNA synthesis and interacts with both template DNA and nascent RNA. Mutations in rpoB can confer resistance to antibiotics like rifampicin, making it a clinically significant target.
