Bacterial Enoyl-Acyl Carrier Protein Reductase (FabI)

Target
FabI
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Reductase
01

Overview

Bacterial enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase (FabI) is a key enzyme in the type II fatty acid synthesis (FAS-II) pathway, catalyzing the NAD(P)H-dependent reduction of trans-2-enoyl-acyl carrier protein to acyl-ACP. This is the final and rate-determining step in each elongation cycle of fatty acid biosynthesis, making it essential for bacterial growth. FabI is a validated antibacterial target due to its essentiality and structural divergence from human enzymes. Inhibitors targeting FabI are under investigation for treating infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria.
