Bacterial enzymes and nucleic acid-associated processes refer to the complex network of proteins and enzymatic reactions required for the maintenance, replication, and expression of the bacterial genome. This broad category includes critical enzymes such as DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which manage DNA supercoiling, and RNA polymerase, which facilitates transcription (StatPearls, 2023). These processes are fundamental to bacterial survival and serve as the primary targets for many clinical antibiotics, such as fluoroquinolones and rifamycins (PubMed, PMC7072134). Because these bacterial enzymes often possess distinct structural features compared to their eukaryotic counterparts, they allow for the development of drugs with high selective toxicity (Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2017). However, this term represents a functional grouping of multiple distinct targets rather than a single receptor or molecule. The clinical utility of drugs targeting these processes is increasingly threatened by the global rise of multi-drug resistant bacterial strains.
