Overview

The bacterial flagellum is a complex, macromolecular nanomachine responsible for locomotion in many motile bacteria. It acts as a rotary motor organelle, propelling the bacterium through liquid environments by rotating a long helical filament. In addition to motility, some bacterial flagella can serve as sensory organelles and play roles in virulence and host-pathogen interactions. It is a target for the development of anti-infectives that aim to inhibit motility or block host-pathogen interactions.
