Bacterial genomic DNA (N/A)

Target
N/A
Molecular classification
Nucleic Acid, DNA
01

Overview

Bacterial DNA is a primary intracellular target for nitroimidazole antibiotics. These drugs are selectively toxic to anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa because they require reductive activation to generate reactive intermediates that directly damage DNA, causing strand breaks and fragmentation. This process disrupts genetic integrity and leads to cell death.

Mechanism of action

Nitroimidazoles are reductively activated in anaerobic bacteria, forming reactive intermediates that cause DNA strand breaks and fragmentation, leading to loss of genetic integrity and cell death.
