Bacterial Growth on Skin Surface

Molecular classification
Microorganism, Bacteria
01

Overview

Bacterial growth on the skin surface refers to the colonization and proliferation of bacteria on the outermost layer of human skin. The skin acts as a physical and chemical barrier, but it is naturally inhabited by a diverse community of microorganisms, including bacteria. Most are harmless or beneficial (commensals), but under certain conditions, pathogenic bacteria can overgrow or invade deeper tissues, leading to infection. Key species include Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Cutibacterium acnes. The resident microbiota competes with potential pathogens. Disruption of the skin barrier or immune suppression allows opportunistic pathogens to invade deeper layers and cause infection.
