Bacterial iron receptor proteins are specialized outer membrane proteins found in bacteria, particularly Gram-negative species, that facilitate the uptake of iron—a critical nutrient for bacterial survival and pathogenicity. These receptors recognize and bind iron-containing molecules such as siderophores (small, high-affinity iron-chelating compounds), heme, or host-derived proteins like transferrin and lactoferrin. Once bound to their ligand, these receptors mediate the transport of iron across the outer membrane into the periplasmic space. Iron acquisition systems are crucial determinants of bacterial pathogenesis. Disrupting these pathways—such as inhibiting TonB-dependent transporters—can limit bacterial growth and virulence. This makes bacterial iron receptors attractive targets for novel antimicrobial strategies against multidrug-resistant pathogens.
