Overview

Bacterial lysis of Proteus species refers to the destruction of Gram-negative bacteria belonging to the Proteus genus, such as Proteus mirabilis and Proteus vulgaris, through the rupture of their cell membranes (StatPearls, 2023). This genus is a frequent cause of complicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) and is distinguished by its ability to produce urease, which raises urine pH and promotes the formation of struvite stones (NIH, 2022). Lysis is typically achieved using bactericidal antibiotics, particularly beta-lactams like ceftriaxone or carbapenems, which inhibit penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) required for peptidoglycan synthesis (PubMed, 2021). The loss of structural integrity leads to osmotic lysis, effectively neutralizing the pathogen. However, the release of endotoxins during lysis can trigger a significant host inflammatory response, and many Proteus strains exhibit intrinsic resistance to antibiotics like polymyxins and nitrofurantoin (Microbiology Society, 2020). Understanding the mechanisms of lysis is crucial for developing effective antimicrobial strategies and managing the clinical consequences of rapid bacterial destruction in patients with urogenital infections.
