Bacterial membrane and respiratory chain components" refers to the ensemble of the cytoplasmic membrane (made of lipid bilayers with embedded proteins) and the electron transport chain (ETC) protein complexes vital for bacterial energy metabolism. The ETC consists of a series of membrane-bound enzymes and electron carriers, including NADH dehydrogenase (complex I), succinate dehydrogenase (complex II), cytochrome bc1 complex (complex III), cytochrome c oxidase (complex IV), and ATP synthase, along with mobile electron carriers such as ubiquinone or menaquinone. These components generate a proton gradient across the membrane, driving ATP production via oxidative phosphorylation. Inhibitors of specific ETC complexes or the membrane are considered potential antibiotics, although broad inhibition risks toxicity to host mitochondria due to structural similarity of the involved enzymes.
