Overview

Bacterial membrane proteins and other cellular macromolecules represent a broad and non-specific group of targets for various antimicrobial agents, particularly antiseptics and disinfectants. These targets include a wide array of essential components such as structural proteins in the cell wall and plasma membrane, enzymes involved in metabolic pathways, and genetic material like DNA and RNA. By interacting with these diverse molecules, antimicrobial agents can cause protein denaturation, membrane leakage, and inhibition of vital cellular functions, leading to bacterial cell death. This multi-target approach is characteristic of broad-spectrum biocides, which often exhibit a lower risk of rapid resistance development compared to site-specific antibiotics. However, the lack of specificity can also lead to potential toxicity in host tissues if the agent is not used appropriately.
