Bacterial Nitroreductase Enzyme (NTR)

Target
NTR
Molecular classification
Enzyme, Oxidoreductase, FMN-dependent enzyme
01

Overview

Bacterial nitroreductases are a diverse family of flavin mononucleotide (FMN)-dependent oxidoreductase enzymes predominantly found in bacteria. These enzymes catalyze the reduction of nitro groups on aromatic and heterocyclic compounds, converting them into amino or hydroxylamino derivatives. They are used in prodrug activation for cancer therapy, cell ablation models, bioremediation, and imaging applications. Engineered variants exist with enhanced catalytic efficiency and altered substrate specificity.
