Pathogenic bacteria in the gut and urogenital tract represent a diverse group of microorganisms capable of causing infectious diseases in the human host. In the gastrointestinal tract, common pathogens include species such as Escherichia coli, Salmonella, and Clostridioides difficile, which can lead to diarrhea, inflammation, and systemic illness (NIH, 2023). In the urogenital tract, pathogens like Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, and uropathogenic E. coli are frequent causes of urinary tract infections and sexually transmitted diseases (CDC, 2022). These organisms are the primary targets of antimicrobial therapy, which aims to inhibit their growth or kill them by interfering with essential bacterial processes like cell wall synthesis or DNA replication. However, the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics against these pathogens often leads to the collateral damage of beneficial commensal bacteria and the emergence of multi-drug resistant strains (PubMed, 2021).
