Overview

Bacterial pathogens causing infectious diarrhea comprise a diverse group of enteric bacteria—including *Salmonella* species, *Shigella* species, diarrheagenic *Escherichia coli* (e.g. STEC, ETEC, EIEC, EAEC, EPEC), *Campylobacter* species, *Yersinia* species, *Vibrio cholerae*, and *Clostridioides difficile*. These organisms are responsible for various syndromes ranging from mild noninflammatory diarrhea to severe inflammatory and invasive disease, with some strains causing complications such as hemolytic uremic syndrome, toxic megacolon, or reactive arthritis. Transmission usually occurs via the fecal-oral route through contaminated food, water, or person-to-person contact. Diagnosis depends on identifying the responsible pathogen, often using stool culture, PCR, or toxin detection. Treatment is supportive in most cases, with antibiotics reserved for specific indications or severe cases. Because this is not a specific molecular target but rather a broad pathological entity, it is not a valid canonical target for traditional pharmacological targeting.
