Bacterial plaque biofilm refers to the structured microbial community that forms on tooth surfaces in the oral cavity. It consists primarily of diverse bacterial species embedded within an extracellular polymeric substance matrix produced by these microorganisms. The formation process begins with initial attachment of planktonic bacteria onto an acquired enamel pellicle on teeth, followed by colonization, maturation into a complex three-dimensional structure, and eventual dispersal. The matrix acts as biological glue that enhances adherence both between microbes and with the tooth surface while protecting resident bacteria from antibiotics, antiseptics, and host immune defenses. Biofilms facilitate inter-bacterial communication via chemical signaling molecules ("quorum sensing"), enabling coordinated activities such as metabolism and defense against environmental threats. Dental plaque is directly implicated in common oral diseases including dental caries (tooth decay) and periodontal diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis due to its role in harboring pathogenic organisms that trigger inflammation or tissue destruction when not adequately controlled through oral hygiene measures. Note: "Bacterial plaque biofilm" is not a single molecular entity but rather a complex multicellular/multispecies structure; thus it does not fit standard definitions for drug targets like receptors or enzymes.
