Microbial protein, also known as single-cell protein (SCP), refers to the protein-rich biomass derived from microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi (including yeasts), and algae. These proteins are produced by cultivating selected microbial species under controlled conditions, often using fermentation processes. The resulting biomass is harvested, processed, and can be used directly as a food or feed ingredient. It is used a meat substitutes (e.g., mycoprotein products like Quorn) or dietary supplements (e.g., spirulina tablets/powders). Offers sustainability advantages, as it can utilize non-arable land substrates including waste streams or methane/methanol sources, resulting in lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional animal agriculture.
