Bacterial protein synthesis is the process by which bacteria translate genetic information encoded in messenger RNA (mRNA) into functional proteins. This process occurs at the ribosome, a large ribonucleoprotein complex found in all living cells. In bacteria, ribosomes are 70S particles composed of two subunits: a small 30S subunit and a large 50S subunit. The bacterial ribosome is essential for cell viability as it translates genetic information into all cellular proteins required for structure, metabolism, regulation, and replication. Many antibiotics target various steps or structural features unique to prokaryotic (bacterial) protein synthesis machinery.
